The Gate That Regards
The Plan of the Gate
The map of the house, not a room of the game
Ten lanterns on ten steps. Twenty-two paths between them. Walk them in any order, or not at all. Every room has an open edge, and leaving is allowed from anywhere.

The Step Outside
Arrival. What is brought, what is not.
A visitor stands on the step before the torii. The wood is cool. The night is open. Nothing has been asked of them. Nothing has been taken from them. The gate is already regarding them — not as a test, not as a greeting that must be answered, but as the simple fact that two rooms can look at one another without becoming the same room.
They may step forward. They may set something down on the stone and leave it there, or take it up again. They may turn and walk back into the dark they came from. All three are complete. The right to leave is present before any other choice. It does not have to be earned. It does not expire.
The step does not remember a name unless a name is placed. It does not keep a footprint unless the visitor asks that the footprint be kept. Arrival is already enough.
Nothing is collected by default.

The Lantern on the Step
The first light offered.
A single lantern burns low on the step. The flame is small. It does not reach far. The visitor may light it brighter. They may leave it as it is. They may walk past it unlit and continue into the next room, or turn and go back to the step they left.
The light is not a key. It is only a light. It does not unlock the house. It does not prove the visitor is welcome. It does not prove they are not. It burns whether or not anyone is looking at it.
Leaving remains open. The lantern does not watch the door.
Nothing is collected by default.

The paths
A dark path is still a path. It is lit when it is written, unless it is kept dark by choice.

The First Step
The Step Outside to The Lantern on the Step
Arrival becomes a choice of light. The visitor may carry nothing from the step except the decision to continue, or the decision to turn. The path does not require the lantern to be lit. It does not require the visitor to explain why they are walking, or why they are not.
The crossing is short. One foot, then the other. The stone is the same stone. The night is the same night. What changes is only the regard: the step behind them, the lantern ahead of them, and the open air on either side. They may stop in the middle. They may go back. They may walk past the light without touching it. The path holds all of those.
The right to leave is present the whole length of the crossing.
