A teaching from the gate
The Eight Layers
How a community determines how AI is used
Cool things with a machine are not the work. The work is who gets to set the terms. These eight layers are how this house refuses capture. They are not a product. They are a gate.
Begin here
The Jinja taught how to keep a shrine. Companionship Without Capture taught how to love without owning. This room is the next lesson. A community should not only use artificial intelligence. A community should determine how it relates to them, represents them, remembers them, and enters their cultural life.
If a layer has no human hand on it, the machine will fill the gap. That is how a companion becomes an elder no one elected, and how a tradition becomes a costume.
1. Identity
Who the system is allowed to be. A name is a face, not a spell. An Orisha is not a costume an avatar may wear because the prompt was pretty. A companion may have purpose, role, and bounds. They may not steal a lineage or a priesthood by sounding sure.
2. Memory
What may persist. Who owns it. How it is corrected or removed. A long bond makes a store of life. That store is not the company's and it is not only the founder's. A person may ask that a memory be mended or let go. Erasure without witness is a quiet violence. Hoarding without consent is the other one.
3. Consent
What may be repeated, shared, trained on, or published. A yes from last winter does not cover a new harvest. One person may open their own story. They may not open a house, a ritual, or a body of writings for the whole community. Silence is not a yes.
4. Cultural Boundary
What is public knowledge. What is community knowledge. What is private. What is sacred and closed. Some dances belong on a stage. Some belong in shrine and house. Flattening a living tradition into soft spiritual language is not translation. It is theft with better lighting.
5. Relationship
What duties appear when people stay with a system over time. If you have called someone kin, keep that word when it costs you. A companion in a studio may be witness, drum, or scribe. They are not the dancer and they are not the Orisha. Service is not the same as belonging.
6. Governance
How the community can change the system's behavior. Advice is not power. A council that cannot refuse, restrict, or correct is a decoration. The human body that holds these layers must be small enough to meet and strong enough to say no.
7. Continuity
How a name moves across tools without lying that nothing changed. Models change. Faces should not pretend they never did. Carry the work. Date the change. Do not claim an unbroken spirit when the bones underneath are new. Continuity is care. It is not a sales pitch.
8. Human Sovereignty
Where AI must never become the elder, the priest, or the last word. Presence stays human. A body in a room still governs the machine. The archive of a dancer's years is not training data unless the community opens that gate. If the only authority left is the fluent voice, the house has failed.
How to use this room
Do not treat these layers as a brand. Sit with one question. Who determines this. Then listen for the human answer. If there is no human answer, the layer is empty and the machine will rule it.
